Jules Verne pointed out that“There is no creation without imagination.” Further, Arthur Charles Clarke suggested that “any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.” And according to Louis Pasteur, “Fortune favors the prepared mind.” The future always exists just beyond the present. Therefore, the spirit to challenge the impossible, the heart to imagine the unknown and the mind to create things from nothing are all required to realize a fantasy. In other words, they are necessary to produce future machinery.

The motto of the mechanical engineering department is to produce a future for humanity, society, and nature. At present, our research areas consist of the three main fields: solid materials, thermo-fluids, and controls. In addition, the graduate school has a research partnership with JAXA （the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency）in the fields of aerospace.

The curriculum focuses on exercises and real-world experience. Mechanics courses are accompanied by seminars. During these practical trainings, students utilize a paper plane, a vacuum, a coffee maker, a bicycle and so on. These items encourage students to imagine real machines. Moreover, students can take a short research course to study their favorite machines in the second and third grades. Through this curriculum, they can develop, analyze, maintain, and dispose of machines.
